On Saturday, December 5, both the Sewickley and Wexford Trios performed on the Saturday Light Brigade! The Sewickley Trio members include Alena playing violin, Andrew playing the cello, and Abby on piano. The Wexford Trio members include Alexa playing violin, Yazan playing the cello, and Clara on piano. Both trios performed in the Sewickley location and streamed to the Saturday Light Brigade which is hosted at the Children’s Museum on the North Side.
The 2019-2020 school year was the third year that the Wexford Trio worked together, and it was the second year for the Sewickley Trio. Students received their parts for this music in December 2019 and began coaching with their teachers in February 2020; because of the pandemic and the switch to virtual lessons shortly thereafter, they resumed socially distant in-person rehearsals once a month from September through November of this year. The 90 minute meetings were led by Ms. Simmi and Ms. Leah, stalwart supporters of these students and the opportunity to share their knowledge and love of chamber music.
Students arrived fully prepared to rehearse together, to hear what their partners’ music sounded like alongside their own part, and eager to learn how to create a musical dialogue between all of the instruments in their group. Each students’ listening and collaborative skills were developed greatly throughout the process, becoming solidified and reliable tools that will serve them well and enhance their overall musicianship in the future.
The performances and interviews on the radio were a hit! The Sewickley Trio performed Barcarolle by Hoffman, and then each member performed a holiday music selection. The Wexford Trio performed Hungarian Dance No 5 by Brahms, Edelweiss from The Sound of Music and Rondo all’Ongarese by Haydn. All members of the trios were interviewed by the host of the Saturday Light Brigade before and during the performance.
We are very grateful that during this pandemic year these students had a chance to prepare for a performance and share their music with family and friends and listeners to the Saturday Light Brigade.
