This year, CYM will be sending several pianists to perform in the lobby of the Benedum Canter as a part of Pittsburgh Ballet Theater’s The Nutcracker! They will entertain the crowds before the ballet begins and also during intermission. Come see the beautiful Benedum, the glorious Nutcracker Ballet, and support our young students.
Even if you have never seen this ballet, you will recognize many of its “hits” such as Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
Fun fact about this Dance– it was the debut for a piano-like instrument called the celeste, or celesta, in the United States. Tchaikovsky was on tour in 1891 for the opening of Carnegie Hall. His journey home took him through Paris, where he discovered a new instrument: the celesta, whose clear, bell-like tone was perfectly fitted to The Nutcracker’s fairy-tale ambience. Listen to this famous composition here – where the celeste is featured with the melody.

See you at the ballet!
