Meredith Huddock Hopkins: US National 1st Place Fiddler

Have you ever wanted to know how to play fiddle music and didn’t know where to start? Well, here’s your chance!

Learn fiddle tunes by ear (and eye), study the history and traditions of the tunes you learn, and discover different fiddle cultures throughout the world in Ms. Meredith’s new CYM Course “Fiddle Time”. Students who can read and play music well (those is Suzuki Book 3 and beyond and approximately age 10 and above), will enjoy this online course that meets on each Saturday in November from 1:00 to 1:45pm. All music will be provided, selected from Scottish/Celtic traditions, all you need is your violin and internet connection.

Here’s a little about the course instructor…

Meredith was the National Accordion and Fiddle Competition Champion in 2018, placing 1st for the Slow Air and 3rd for the Hornpipe/Jig. Her accomplishments were recognized by the BBC where she was featured in radio interview. Her persistence also paid off when she earned 1st in the US National Scottish Fiddle Competition (2018), after placing 3rd in this forum in 2017, and 2nd in 2015.

Meredith earned a Bachelor of Music Performance from Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music, located in Cleveland, and a Master in Scottish Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in Glasgow. One of Meredith’s coaches, Dr. Melinda Perttu, Associate Professor of Music at Westminster College, shares her observations:

“As a performer, Meredith is excellent… she always plays beautifully, frequently pouring her heart and soul into her performance, maintaining a professional composure, and interacting charmingly with her audience” and, “As a teacher, Meredith has passion. She has a warm personality, and has a great rapport with her students.”

Meredith was raised in Hampton and began her music education at Center for Young Musicians when she was 18 months old. She is a former student of Ms. Leah Givelber and now a Suzuki Violin and Viola teacher in the Ann Arbor area where she performs as a substitute violinist with the Michigan Philharmonic. We are thrilled to welcome Meredith back to the CYM family!
