CYM Summer Choir Presentation

July 31, 2019

On Tuesday night, our CYM Summer Choir gave a performance, demonstrating a sampling of what was learned over the summer. Having only met eight times, the children were eager to present their hard work to the parents, who were delighted and amazed at all that had been accomplished. The program began with a demonstration of vocal exercises and rounds, followed by a selection of songs. Students had chosen different “poses” for each piece, and one song was even accompanied by percussion instruments! Kristin Butler, parent of Abigail said: “It was a great show! We loved hearing their voices. Thank you for your time with them, sharing your gifts, and especially your patience!” During the reception, Mrs. Rucker presented a piano recital of of Irish and American folk songs arranged for piano solo! Thank you to all the parents and family members who came to support these young singers. Watch for...

Early Childhood Music Classes: More Than Just Fun and Games!

July 29, 2019

Because there is FUN, and there are some GAMES….but why stop there? If you are going to invest in music for your young child, then you will want to be sure there is more to it than just fun and games. But you might not know what that “more” is! That’s OK, most people don’t! After all, what could be taking place in a class of toddlers? Sounds pretty much like a recipe for mayhem, amirite? Thankfully, the research has been going on for decades regarding young children and music, and we know a lot about what that early childhood music and movement class should look like. Much of what we do in the early years at the Center for Young Musicians is driven by the work of Dr. Lorna Heyge, who wrote one of the first childhood music programs in the United States. Working in Germany in the 1970s,...

Teen Strings – Featured CYM Camp

April 22, 2019

Playing music in an ensemble of any size takes copious application of many senses at once! It’s not a race mentality, with a feel of “every man for himself!”, which would result in total cacophony. Rather, musicians work together to create the whole of the music. They take turns leading the melody and providing the hushed accompaniment. They must breathe together as one in order to begin together. Music created in an ensemble has motion – and the story that an ensemble can tell is a vibrant one, with many layers and textures. Come to the Teen Strings Camp and explore what it takes to play with others and tell a story. Follow a conductor’s gestures – how to come in together, when to get louder, quieter, faster, and slower, and when to bring your part out, and when to be the accompaniment! Work on these aspects of musicianship as you also try playing as an ensemble without a...

Music Exploration Camp – Featured CYM Camp

April 20, 2019

I remember my father taking my rented clarinet back to the music store, to trade it in for a flute. “She’s mastered this one” my dad said in his usual dry wit, as he placed the clarinet case on the counter.  Sometimes students know what instrument they want to play from a very young age. Oftentimes, though, a student might start on one instrument and then really get interested in another instrument! That is precisely why we have designed summer camps at CYM: to offer a time of instrumental exploration!  “Music Exploration Camp” is the perfect way to try out two instruments in a fun, engaging atmosphere! Have you ever wanted to see what it is like to play the piano or the guitar? Find out by jumping into our one week-long camp. Activities will include singing, playing percussion instruments, and listening to different styles of music. Learn basic harmonies...
